Travel Laundry Tips

Tips to Avoid Looking Like Road-kill.

Okay, maybe that's a little harsh but the wrinkle-frump traveler just won't get the best seat in the restaurant. Easy tips for always looking your fresh best.

Start Right by Packing Right.

  1. Start by packing wrinkle resistant clothing; clothes made from the wonderful micro-fiber, rayon, and easy-care silk and tensile are perfect for travel. Little or no care required.
  2. Button buttons and zip zippers. Avoid wrinkles by carefully folding garments along seam and normal crease lines and pack in plastic packing bags.
  3. Pack heavy items (such as shoes and hair dryers) on bottom of luggage (the wheeled side!); light items on top.
  4. Excess room in luggage causes clothes to shift thus wrinkle - take up space with air inflated plastic zip bags.
  5. Pack shoes in shoe bags.
  6. Unpack and hang garments as soon as you arrive at your destination. Ask for more hangers or pack plenty of our inflatable hangers (perfect for air dry laundry too).
  7. Hang items in shower to naturally steam out wrinkles.
  8. When all else fails - use the hotel iron and ironing board - a quick touch up does wonders for your appearance. International hotels often have in-room pant pressers. Or take along your own Travel Iron.

Travel Laundry Tips

No Ticket, No Laundry!

No one likes doing laundry when on vacation but the alternative is taking way too many clothes. A few simple things to make your clothing fresh.

  1. Most important is to have fresh smelling clothes - smoke, grease and perspiration are the worst. If not possible to sink wash items have them laundered (hotel or coin self-operated).
  2. Less is more when using soap  for sink washing (less suds requires less rinsing). Spot clean areas instead of whole garment with travel stain removers.
  3. Dust off shoes and pack pre-moistened silicon oil sponge cases for quick shine. In a pinch lotion moisturizers will help clean scuff marks.
  4. Take along fabric deodorizers to eliminate odors and freshen clothes.
  5. Pack scented dryer sheets in your luggage to keep clothes smelling just laundered. Also good for re-scenting smoky and smelly hotel rooms.
  6. Pack and use travel size spray wrinkle removers. and static-cling eliminators.
  7. Be sure to have a laundry kit that includes a sink stopper and laundry line.
  8. For emergency repairs take along a travel sewing kit.
  9. Wear nylon or silk under garments - avoid 100% cotton as it takes longer to dry.
  10. Avoid packing wet or damp clothes - mold and mildew grow rapidly in humid climates. If unavoidable - pack damp items in zip plastic packing bags. to separate from other clothing.
  11. Be sure to shake out clothing and shoes before re-packing especially when traveling to areas with lots of insects and bugs.
  12. Once home and unpacked let your luggage air out before storing for your next trip. After a water rafting trip years ago my husband stored his already rolled sleeping bag for the next trip - a year later - he unrolled the sleeping bag to air it out and found a very large, very ALIVE Scorpion, which had survived the year long hiatus. He bought a new sleeping bag for that trip!
